Bipolar is a mental disorder marked by alternating periods of elation and depression About Bipolar Disorder Bipolar is a mental disorder marked by alternating periods of elation and depression. Bipolar disorder,  also known as ‘Manic-depression’ is a brain disorder that causes cyclical and unusual shifts in behavior, mood thoughts, energy, and the ability to function. Depression is characterized by depressed mood, lack of interest, sleep and appetite changes, feelings of guilt poor concentration and suicidal thoughts. This can alternate with mania, which is characterized by elevation of mood, inflated self-esteem, decreased sleep need, increased energy, racing thoughts, increased goal directed activity especially pleasurable ones.
